Nature Notes (#534)-Thursday and Friday’s Partial Lunar Eclipse Was the Longest in 580 Years

Rarely a week goes by where I have not been out in the yard, filling my bird feeders and birdbaths and then inside reading a good book. My husband has been taking care of the yard for me. I was more ill than I realized and it will take some time now to recover and get outside and do regular things. And no, I haven’t been out but my doctor reminded me that there is another person in this house who is out every single day and could have brought a virus back. Thankfully not COVID. Thank you for your patience and stay well.

There was a partial lunar eclipse on Friday but we were socked in with bad weather but I have a photo from 3015 when it was a clear night sky. Not a good photo as I didn’t get my tripod out.

Thursday and Friday’s Partial Lunar Eclipse Was the Longest in 580 Years

“Thursday And Friday’S Partial Lunar Eclipse Was The Longest In 580 Years”. Nytimes.Com, 2021, https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/18/science/lunar-eclipse-full-moon-tonight.html. Accessed 23 Nov 2021.

A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth passes between the moon and the sun. The atmosphere acts as a filter on the sunlight, so the shadow that our planet casts on the moon resembles something like the light seen at sunset.

This eclipse was unusual because of its length; from start to finish, it lasted more than six hours. Other recent lunar eclipses have transpired more quickly because the moon was closer to Earth in its orbit. But the moon’s orbit is elliptical, and currently, it is near its maximum distance from us, so it took longer to pass through Earth’s shadow. The last partial eclipse of this duration occurred in the 1440s.

Another eclipse of this length won’t come around for many years, but there will be others to enjoy. A total lunar eclipse, visible to viewers on the East Coast, will occur on May 15

Nature Notes (#533)-Winter isn’t coming, it is already here

Sorry as I am a bit under the weather if flat out on the couch fits with that expression. I wanted to at least get the linky up. I need to visit last week too. Sloppy cold rain and snow here….. winter is here. Pond still open.

Nature Notes (#532)~Most of the leaves are gone…. As the leaves start to turn and change color, I begin to change….

My free prose….
Most of the leaves are gone….
As the leaves start to turn and change color, I begin to change.
I want to take joy in the shades of gold and rust and red…
But I know what is coming…
As the leaves start to fall, silently to the ground…. I wish I could enjoy them….
But I know what is coming…..
As the leaves are picked up by the wind swirling for a last dance…
I wish I could join them…
But I know what is coming…..
As the leaves pile up gently tucking in my garden beds…
I wish I could wish them a good sleep
But I know what is coming…..
As the leaves crunch under my feet, I wish I could savor that sound..
But I know what is coming….
The yard is quiet as all the insects are gone till next spring.. Too quiet…
The trees are bare, no longer protecting my yard…. I feel exposed…
My vibrant yard full of singing insects and croaking frogs is gone..
And winter is coming….
(not pretending to be poetry, but more prose and what I am feeling today..)
